Shotton Hall Breakdance Academy is a community dance group based at Shotton Hall School in Peterlee County Durham. The academy opened in October 2006. The group have taken part in workshops with Danny Price in Manchester and performed at the Axis Urban Festival Stoke on Trent and Easington Pride community Festival Peterlee. August 2007 saw Shotton Hall School host their first Breakdance Festival where young dancers were invited to take part in breakdance masterclasses. The dancers are currently working with The Sage Gateshead Co-Musica project and Hype Film Ltd in producing a dance music video.
Carr Hill Lads have some new members who have just joined the dance club at Carr Hill School, Gateshead. The original group started one year ago and has met every week to create new sequences and learn street dance skills from a variety of tutors. The piece that they will perform is a fusion of street dance, hip hop, physical theatre and contemporary dance styles.
As members of the Newcastle University Breakdancing Society, NBS are mostly students of Newcastle and Northumbria Universities. Taught by Raw B of the Bad Taste Cru, both beginners and some more experienced dancers have come together for their first Hip Hop theatre performance.
Blyth B-Boyz were established in 2006 after a workshop at Dance City with Connor O’Kane. On the back of this visit Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure set about developing a regular breakdance session, which has attracted funding from Blyth Valley Council and the Local Network Fund. This funding will secure classes until March 2008.
The young B-Boyz perform regularly and have recently performed in Dance City’s community dance platform Shimmer. They are a fantastically talented and lively group of young people and are a credit to Blyth Valley Arts and Leisure, Connor O’Kane and the area that they represent.
