BA(Hons) Dance Choreography

BA(Hons) Dance Choreography

BA(Hons) Dance Choreography is run by Northumbria University in collaboration with Dance City.

As the only degree programme that is run between a University and a National Dance Agency, the degree offers an exceptional opportunity to develop as a creative artist in a vibrant environment of performance, experimentation and artistic exchange.

The internationally unique relationship with Dance City ensures that the curriculum and course content is in constant dialogue with professional performance practices and thus enables students to engage with current and cutting edge approaches to contemporary dance. Throughout the programme students engage in a rigorous artistic programme that is designed to enable them to develop as expressive, articulate and professionally skilled dance artists able to work competently in a variety of performance and choreographic contexts. The expertise of University and Dance City staff supports students throughout their artistic and professional development. Through the Choreography modules, students are encouraged to develop their own approaches to making that are individually relevant but also referential to or participate in the dialogues of contemporary practices. The degree culminates in students directing a work for a platform performance through which they can synthesise their interests and create a work that expresses their vision as an emerging contemporary dance artist.
Students are also encouraged to be active within the regional dance community through attending performances, additional classes and projects as time allows. This engagement helps to feed a healthy dance culture, assists students’ knowledge and understanding of current practices, and increases their awareness of possible future employment opportunities.
