We are proud to announce we are an official partner of the Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony taking place this September.

Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony

This year, the Bupa Great North Run will be the first event of its kind in the world to reach its one millionth finish. On Thursday 4 September, the NewcastleGateshead Quayside and the River Tyne will be transformed into a huge outdoor arena for an Opening Ceremony, marking the start of the official countdown to the 1 millionth finish of the Bupa Great North Run on Sunday 7 September.

Through new writing, mass choreography, live music, a giant floating sculpture, video mapping onto the Sage Gateshead, pyrotechnics, a specially commissioned film and more, the Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony will tell the incredible story of the North East – a story of innovators in industry, sport and technology, of ordinary people working together to achieve extraordinary things – inspired by the energy of a million runners powering Tyneside’s past and future.

And you can be part of it…

Great North Run Culture are looking for 1500 volunteer performers to play a major part in the Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony.

Forming a giant circuit around the Quayside, the mass cast of 1500 will perform at key moments during the show, surrounding the audience and bringing the story to life.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform alongside hundreds in an ambitious, one of a kind spectacle; a truly life-changing experience.

No experience is required – they are looking for anyone and everyone to come and represent the North East! Whether you’re a trained dancer, enjoy the occasional disco, or have never tapped your foot to a beat – you’re more than welcome!

Volunteer Performers will be required to attend two weekend rehearsals in August, and be available from 2pm into the evening on Thursday 4 September.

If you are 16 years old and over on or before 8 August   and would like to be part of the Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony mass cast please visit their website to sign up by Friday 18 July.
