Dance City have announced plans for a taster day for people aged 55+ coinciding with October’s celebrations around National Older People’s Day. Following the success of last year’s event, Dance City are excited to once again offer this opportunity. The event takes place at Dance City on Saturday 10 October, from 12-3.30pm and it costs just £2 to take part.

The 55+ Taster Day is a fun and lively event for anyone aged 55 and over who wants to try dance. Whether you have no previous experience of dance or you’re a regular dancer you are welcome to come along. The event offers opportunities to try out a variety of styles – Tap, Ballet, Pilates, SwingFitness, Salsa and Tango. In between the sessions, there will be time to chat over tea, coffee and biscuits and meet other like-minded folk. The event takes place in Dance City’s Theatre with plenty of space to move and socialise.

Dancing is a great way of having fun, keeping fit and active and socialising. There is plenty of evidence to support the health benefits of dance for older people. Research suggests that older people who take part in dance have overall better health, less visits to the doctor’s, improved mental health and socialise more. (Creative Scotland, 2012).

Anthony Baker, Artistic Director said: “We’re really passionate about creating opportunities for people of all ages to dance in the North East. We introduced a series of new over 55’s classes last year and we’ve been overwhelmed by their popularity and now have many more people over 55 who enjoy our classes”.

“While people over 55 are welcome to come to any adult class, we’ve found that some people prefer to be in an environment where they’re not compared to younger more agile dancers and that this can be quite liberating. We’d encourage anyone to have a go. Whether you’ve danced before or you’re an absolute beginner, this day offers a great opportunity to find out what you like”.

“We will have plenty of Dance City teachers and staff on hand to help make you feel welcome, chat and answer any questions you have.”

Dance City ran a similar event last year and this is what the participants had to say about it:

“Great! Made me realise I could do things I never thought I could!”
“Inspirational and extremely welcoming.”
“Wonderful! We achieved so much in such a short time.”
“I have thoroughly enjoyed this afternoon. I had fun and didn’t feel at all silly.”
“Fun. Get’s you moving!”

The 55+ Taster Day takes place at Dance City, in Newcastle City Centre on Saturday 10 October, from 12-3.30pm. It costs £2 to take part.
