Are you passionate about Dance? Do you have talent in this area? Is your ambition to have a professional career in the dance industry? Gateshead College and Dance City have come together to offer a unique qualification to help you develop, excel and pursue a career as a dancer.
You will need (or have the equivalent of) 4 GCSE Grade Cs or above (including one in performing arts or dance) or be pursuing personal study at a specialist level in dance and/or performing arts to enrol on this programme. You will also need to audition.
You'll gain experience of a range of dance specialisms including Classical Ballet, Contemporary Dance, Choreography, Urban Dance and World Dance making you a versatile dance artist. In addition you'll study core units linked to professional and performance-based practice, the study of the performing arts industry and also the historical context of performance.
Baltic Campus
You'll be based at our fantastic £39million Baltic campus on the quayside. The campus has a prime location on Gateshead quayside, and state-of-the-art facilities including a Jacuzzi, gym and sauna, a 200 seat theatre, state-of-the-art classrooms, training kitchen and restaurant, refectory, bistro and vending areas.
You will also study at Dance City. Dance City provides excellent facilities, excellent performances, excellent artist support, excellent teachers and excellent opportunities for all to be involved in dance. This has been made possible partly through their move into a new £7.6m purpose-built dancehouse in 2005.
National Diplomas are equivalent to 3 A levels but are more vocational (training and assessment are focused on the skills you need to work in the industry) and therefore ideal if you know you want a career in dance.
If you attend the course full time you are expected to achieve the National Diploma (18 units) over a 2 year period.
A number of specified units are assessed on a combination of coursework and external tests with the rest of the programme units assessed on a coursework basis.
The course has a strong vocational focus. There is an emphasis on practical activity with high level, comprehensive, pure dance training delivered by professionals from the renowned Dance City Academy. You will develop your technique, artistic understanding and overall fitness to prepare you for a career in professional dance performance.
You will be trained by highly skilled, experienced professional dancers and have access to the advanced training programme at Dance City.
BTC National Diploma in Performing Arts (Dance)
This specialist qualification will enable you to go on to dance and performing arts degree programmes or directly into advanced training and professional work in the dance industry with companies such as The Northern school of Contemporary Dance, LABAN, The Scottish School of Contemporary Dance and London School of Contemporary Dance.
This course is specifically tailored to prepare you for a career in professional dance performance.
