Dance City launch new season of international and local work to excite North East audiences.
Dance City’s new January-July season has been announced and offers an exciting mix of work from across the world and promises to entice audiences once again with high quality dance performances.
Dance City has introduced two new stands to its performance programme from January 2012. The Discover season gives audiences the opportunity to see new and cutting-edge performances at the venue, being amongst the first in the UK to have such an opportunity, and at incredible value with all tickets priced at just £5. The second, the International season, features some of the most interesting and dance performances from across the world, bringing internationally acclaimed work to be presented to North East audiences.
Kicking off the season Flex Dance Company make their professional debut with Shake the Tree in January. Flex are a dance company of artists with a learning disability.
May, a critically acclaimed piece of dance theatre from Probe, is written by theatre favourite Tim Crouch and blends drama, dance and spoken word in this daring new work. Also in February Swedish company Andersson Dance offers two very different pieces of work – The Making of Dance presents then explores the development of the piece with the audience, followed by Name of the Next Song a work that draws inspiration from the stunning Scandinavian landscapes. Dan Canham (DV8, Kneehigh, Punchdrunk) kicks off with the first of the Discover season, taking audiences on an exquisite dance theatre journey through a dilapidated Irish theatre in 30 Cecil Street.
In March, balletLORENT presents Underneath the Floorboards a magical journey to a secret world that is filled with dance and song for children aged 0-5 years and their families. Björn Säfsten, one of Scandinavia’s most interesting choreographers, looks into how we present ourselves in the world in Display, continuing the venue’s international programme of work in mid-March. On 29th March Dance City’s own dance platform Public Announcement is a fantastic opportunity to see new dance work recently created in the North of England.
Dance City will invest in a series of commissions this year with six new pieces being developed with support from the organisation. The first to be made possible is an exciting new piece, Roma, by North East based contemporary dance company Lo-Giudice Dance. While Letter to my Father continues the theme of work developed in the region with local company Appetite Dance Productions presenting this deeply moving piece influenced by Chinese culture.
National Dance Company Wales make a welcome return to Dance City in May and the Mark Bruce Company make their first appearance after wowing North East audiences at The Sage Gateshead in 2010, with Made in Heaven. Both these works are highly visual dance theatre which will delight audiences.
Joseph Mercier returns to the venue with his new work, Cruising and Clubbing as part of Northern Pride’s 2012 programme. Meanwhile, Breakin’ Convention’s (A Sadler’s Wells Project) presents Open Art Surgery a high energy showcase of new ideas in hip hop theatre.
