Newcastle City Library commissions Dance City artist for The Late Shows
Dance City, working in partnership with Newcastle City Library, has awarded a site specific commission for this year’s Late Shows in Newcastle and Gateshead.
Following the submission of a large number of high quality creative proposals from North East artists, Rose Payne was selected for the commission by Dance City to make this site responsive piece of work to be performed throughout the new City Centre Library on Sat 19 May.
The Late Shows is an after dark programme of events and exhibitions centering on the cultural venues in Newcastle Gateshead that are usually closed in the evening. Newcastle Libraries have worked on this project for a number of years, creating innovative experiences for new audiences to come to the state-of-the-art facilities.
This commission will bring new audiences to dance whilst bringing a vibrant art form into the library whilst giving an alternative view on the value and inspiration of the building and the books and knowledge it houses.
Anthony Baker, Artistic Director of Dance City, says
Dance City is dedicated to establishing new partnerships to bring dance to new audiences and into different spaces. We have been working with the team at Newcastle City Library for some time and this seemed like the ideal platform for Dance City and the library to bring our audiences together in this unique way. The idea of bringing dance into a library environment and allowing artists to respond to this amazing space is really exciting and we cannot wait to see what Rose’s finished production.
This commission will take place at Newcastle City Library on Saturday 19 May 7-11pm and admission is free.
