Surface Area Dance Theatre Creative Director Nominated for Two Industry Awards

It was recently announced that Nicole Vivien Watson, Creative Director of Surface Area Dance Theatre, has been nominated for a Prince’s Trust Enterprise Award and a Women Into the Network Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. “It is an honor to be considered with such an illustrious group of nominees. I am deeply touched to be given this recognition for the work that we at Surface Area Dance Theatre are undertaking.”

Durham native, Watson, trained at Newcastle College before completing her dance education at The Northern School of Contemporary Dance in 2005. She formed Surface Area Dance Theatre in Newcastle as a collective of young international artists focused on sustaining a diverse appreciation of dance and movement. Surface Area Dance Theatre is a resident company at Dance City, the National Dance Agency for the North East of England.

Surface Area, under Watson’s direction, seeks out cross media collaborations with other artists such as filmmakers, textile designers, musicians and composers. The company successfully premiered its new work, Nullius, at Dance City in early October. Based upon the success of Nullius, the company has just recently been awarded continued funding from the Northern Rock Cultural and Heritage Programme.
Watson’s most recent collaboration is with one of the founders of Japanese Butoh, Yoshito Ohno. “Engaging with Butoh has informed how I choreograph movement from gentle emotions within for the work I create,” Watson said. “I hope to integrate this approach into every aspect of how Surface Area Dance Theatre progresses as an entrepreneurial company.”
