Given the recent changes to government guidance in regards to dance studios and performances we thought we’d take the opportunity to let you know what the Dance City team have been up to and what we have planned in the coming weeks.

Professional Artists

We’re pleased to announce that we are able to offer studio space to professional artists for solo practice or groups of up to four who belong to the same ‘bubble’. Throughout the rest of July and August we will be taking the opportunity to reallocate artistic residencies that were due to take place over the lockdown period as part of ‘Creative Summer’.

Performances

Our Autumn 2020 season has now been cancelled or postponed. Our programming team have been working hard to reschedule each of these performances to later dates in 2021. This August we look forward to premiering a new digital performance created by our graduate company ‘The Collective’.

Classes and Workshops

Our classes planning team are working to realise a safe and socially distanced public class timetable which we hope to launch in September. We will also be trialling some digital classes to operate alongside these in the coming weeks. We will be clearly communicating via our website, social channels and email when each of the events become available to book.

Engagement

Throughout the month of August our Engagement team, in partnership with Street Games and Newcastle and Gateshead’s ‘Best Summer Ever’ will be delivering free, socially distanced dance workshops to streets in the North East. This week they have also been ‘Dancing in The Streets’ with competition winners in Curtis Road!

Training Academy

The CAT and BA programmes have finished for the academic year and the Training Academy team are working to design a combined program of digital and socially distanced classes and lectures when students return to full time study in September. The MA are currently working with renowned companies and choreographers to create a collection of solos that will be combined into a digital performance that will be premiered later this month.

As ever we are continually monitoring the latest guidance and adapting our strands of work accordingly. We are confident that unless circumstances change we will be able to welcome the public into our building again soon.

Donate

Dance City is the North East’s leading dance organisation and is at the heart of our region’s dance community. Over the past thirty years we have played an essential role in the community, supporting artists to forge a career in the region and delivering inspiring engagement projects for people of all walks of life.

Throughout the pandemic we – like many of you – have faced unprecedented challenges, and will continue to do so as we plan our recovery over the coming months.

We understand that the impact of coronavirus is being felt by everyone, but if you are able support us by making a donation of any size, this will help us to continue to support artists and communities and secure our future. Click here to donate.
