In this improver class we have the space to explore a wider range of flamenco styles (palos) such as Alegrias, Soleá por Bulerias, Fandangos and Sevillanas.

We will also develop our skills in Tangos and Bulerias alongside learning more complex rhythmic patterns (compás) and clapping (palmas). We will also develop our posture, alignment, foot strength and technique, arm and hand positions, and marking steps (marcaje). During each class we will follow a warm-up routine, work on technique, and learn choreographic routines from one or more flamenco styles. We will also develop our expression and improvisation skills.

What is flamenco?

Flamenco is a fiery and rhythmic style of music and dance developed by the gitano (Romani) people of Andalucia in southern Spain. Flamenco has roots in Indian, Arabic, Jewish, African, South American and Caribbean, as well as Spanish, music and dance. It is now danced around the world and has achieved the status of UNESCO “intangible world heritage”.

What do I need to wear?

Ladies may prefer to wear shoes with a small block heel and a long skirt, men can wear trousers and shoes or boots with a small heel if you have them. If you have flamenco shoes or boots, that is great too!

Who is it for?

This class is intended for those with a minimum of six months experience of flamenco dance

Susan began her flamenco studies in 2015 in the UK with Gemma De La Cruz, Inmaculada Ortega, Carmela Romero and Marta Ruiz. She has gone on to study in Spain with flamenco dancers of international reputation including, Adela Campallo, Antonio Canales, Rafaela Carrasco, Rafael Estévez, Marco Flores, Natalia Garcia-Huidobro, Patricia Guerrero, Concha Jareño, Maria Juncal, Manuel Liñan, Belén López, Alfonso Losa, La Lupi, José Maya, Ana Morales, Ruben Olmo, Valeriano Paños, Irene La Seranilla and Carmen La Talegona.

Susan’s aim is to develop good technique, so students can enjoy and express themselves through flamenco.
