Dance Heritage Project

Dance City was thrilled to deliver a dance heritage project that brought together volunteers, dance enthusiasts, and artists based in the North East to explore and map the region’s expansive and unique dance heritage.
Dance City is the North East’s leading dance charity. Our mission has been to support the artistic life, education, and health of people of all ages in the North East by making great dance experiences possible for everyone.
The project was made possible with funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, thanks to National Lottery players.
Dance City’s Digital Archive
Dance City’s pioneering digital archive is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the rich dance heritage of the North East. This project marks a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to honour the region’s vibrant dance history and ensure its stories, voices, and movements are accessible for generations to come.
This archive has been made possible thanks to the generous support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund. We are grateful to National Lottery players, whose contributions have enabled us to create this freely available resource. The National Lottery Heritage Fund champions projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage, and their support has laid the foundations for our long-term strategy to protect and invigorate the North East’s unique dance legacy.
The archive is a living, evolving resource designed for everyone. Schools, community groups, and organisations at regional, national, and international levels are invited to explore and contribute to this growing collection. As part of the project, we are also developing an innovative map that charts the region’s dance heritage alongside the migration of communities into the North East, offering new perspectives on how dance has been shaped by the people who call this region home.
