North East Dance Open Pitch Call Out for Artists

Date: Tuesday 23 November 2021

Time: 6pm – 8pm

Venue: Dance City, Temple Street, Newcastle, NE1 4BR

Drinks and networking: 8pm – 9pm in the café/social space (optional)

Are you a dance artist, maker, choreographer, practitioner or producer, creating a new project, and wanting to connect with local venues and organisations to develop your work, be it on stage or within the community?

Join us this November as a fantastic cohort of venues and organisations from across the region interested in programming and supporting dance, come together to meet local dance professionals, offer resources and discover new work for audiences.

The nature of the Open Pitch event is to exchange resources and ideas, be it skills, facilities, time or perhaps something else? What is it that you need to support you and your work, and what could you offer in return?

We are offering up to 15 artists the chance to shine a spotlight on their work by delivering a presentation to share who they are, what they are working on and how they would like to be supported on their current project. We are asking you to include in your presentation an offer of what you can deliver, do or dance for the venues and organisations taking part. Venues will then consider and select who to exchange their resources with, setting up new partnerships and collaborations.

The Dance City stage will host each presentation, in whatever format you decide, with prompts, your own props, perhaps a participatory demonstration, a presentation or a performance, you choose how best to showcase yourself, your idea, your ask and your offer in up to 3mins. We’ll need to know at least 7 days in advance if you need any technical support.

The venues and organisations invited to join us for the evening are:

  • Alnwick Playhouse
  • ARC Stockton
  • Borderlands
  • Durham Culture Partnership
  • Gateshead Council
  • Gateshead International Festival of Theatre
  • Newcastle Arts Development
  • Northern Stage
  • Queens Hall Hexham
  • Stockton International Riverside Festival
  • Sunderland Fire Station

To be eligible to take part you must be from, living or have trained in the North East and be making or managing a project which includes dance or physical movement (including circus), which takes place in the region. Only one application can be submitted per artist/company.

Your project may be a performance, a participatory workshop or event, a talk or lecture, a research and development residency, a film or something else, as long as the focus is on dance and movement practices.

Dance City is a fully accessible building with lift access, a hearing loop and accessible toilets. On request we can provide a BSL interpreter for both artists pitching or for anyone attending as an audience member. Please email us to discuss any access needs and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

We encourage artists pitching to think about how they can make the content of their pitch flexible and accessible. Ideas of formats to consider are images, video with subtitles, audio, handouts on white and cream paper, large print, captioning and audio description.

For artists successfully selected to take part in the event, a £30 payment to cover your expenses is available, paid by BACS transfer upon receipt of an invoice.

We actively encourage applications from artists who self-identify as black, Asian, ethnically diverse, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, neurodiverse or disabled.
