About
1 Feb - Contemporary Class

James will deliver a contemporary technique class as a means to expand the dancer’s enquiry into technical and performance skills. Dancers are encouraged to work in a grounded and centered way, but also to focus on expansive movement, use of weight, artistic expression and group connection. By combining structured exercises with improvised sequences, the class allows space for both technical development and artistic play.

20 March - Ballet Class

James offers a contemporary approach to ballet in a class in which dancers have space to explore weight, expansion, and artistic play

James trained at Central School of Ballet, London, before initially working for a number of years in various companies in Germany. James joined Scottish Dance Theatre (SDT) as a dancer in 2000 and was soon appointed Rehearsal Director. He was involved in the creation and performance of over 40 new works, by choreographers including Janet Smith, Rui Horta, Jo Stromgren, Kate Weare, Liv Lorent, James Wilton, Hofesh Shechter and Ina Christel Johannessen among others.

In 2011 James gained a distinction for an MA in Contemporary Dance at London Contemporary Dance School, specialising in the role of the rehearsal director.

In 2012 James was appointed Acting Artistic Director of SDT for an interim period, before taking up post as Creative Partnership and Rehearsal Director.

James worked from 2013-2016 at London Contemporary Dance School as a Lecturer in Dance where he taught ballet and contemporary, and was also Head of Third Year.

James currently works as Education and Projects Manager with BalletLORENT, Newcastle.
