In partnership with four Gateshead primary schools and Gateshead Council Dance City delivered an  inspirational dance performance piece ‘Flying Free on Gateshead Quay’ at The Great Exhibition of the North.

Over 100 children across Fellside, Parochial and Carhill Primary schools worked with Dance City artists over two months to learn and master a custom routine created for the occasion.

The choreography, composed by Dance City artists Cheryl Day, Lissie Connor and Rebecca Hunt, followed the theme of ‘angels and birds’, drawing inspiration from the iconic Angel of the North’s 20th anniversary as well as the the Quayside’s resident Kittiwake population, the only inland colony of this endangered bird in the UK.

Performances will took place outside The Sage Gateshead and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art. As well as being part of the practical experience children also achieved their Discover Arts Award as part of the project.
