In a unique partnership with Re:Bourne (the charitable arm of Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures), Dance City and Newcastle Theatre Royal – 2014 had a focus on boys dancing. The year-long project enabled over 200 boys from across the North East access to free dance workshops to learn material from Matthew Bourne’s all male show ‘Lord of the Flies’.  Of the 200 young men attending workshops across the region (in partnership with our dance hub venues) 100 were asked to audition for the company at Dance City.  16 young men aged 11-25 years were then selected and had the opportunity to perform alongside professional dancers in the 5 performances at Newcastle Theatre Royal in Nov 2014.    The project was delivered with two Dance Ambassadors with support and guidance from Dance City, to develop young dance artists.

We followed this at Dance City with a ‘Boyz Moves platform’ in Nov, which showcased 70 talented young men dancing on stage in a performance just for them.

Statistics & Successes

222 boys took part in free dance workshops across the region.  Since the project we have had an increase in boys auditioning for our CAT (Centre for Advanced Training programme) at Dance City and 10 of the youth cast boys are currently training weekly as part of it.
