This workshop is presented as part of Payal Ramchandani's Just Enough Madness Pilot Tour 2025-26
Step into the vibrant world of Carnatic rhythm through Konnakol- the South Indian art of vocal percussion. This workshop is designed specifically for percussionists and drummers who may not be familiar with Carnatic rhythmic traditions but are eager to expand their rhythmic vocabulary.
Led by experienced practitioner, Prathap Ramachandra, the session introduces the foundational elements of konnakol, including solkattu (spoken syllables), time cycles (tala), and rhythmic phrasing. Participants will explore how vocalising rhythm sharpens timing, deepens groove, and enhances improvisational skills across any percussion style.
Whether you're a kit drummer, hand percussionist, or composer, this workshop offers practical tools to:
Improve rhythmic precision and internal pulse
Understand and apply rhythmic subdivisions in new ways
Unlock polyrhythms, cross-rhythms, and complex phrasing
Strengthen coordination between voice, mind, and hands
About Prathap
A virtuoso trained in South Indian classical tradition of Carnatic music to perform with a range of percussion instruments - Mridangam, Ghatam, and Kanjira, Prathap has performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages - from the Sydney Opera House and London’s Royal Albert Hall (BBC Proms) to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. Known for his cross-cultural collaborations and his band Rhythm Yatra, his work bridges tradition and innovation with infectious energy and flair.
