Contemporary, B-Girl and dancing Salsa and Samba for over thirteen years, Ella is interested in these styles to choreograph her artistic work. She established Ella Mesma Company in 2011. She also established Element Arts- a Latin dance and education Company in 2007, and curates Latin Dance Theatre Festival Roots of Rumba in London. She was awarded a Winston Churchill Scholarship in 2015 for further research into Afro Cuban and Afro Brazilian forms with Contemporary Dance. In 2015/16 Ella was one of five female choreographers selected for a Bench Fellow Award.
Working professionally in Latin dance from 2003, she was selected as Passista (First Soloist) for Rio Carnival 2006 and Rainha da Bateria for LSS 2008. Ella graduated from Leeds University (Politics and Sociology) in 2004, and studied for a Diploma at Laban then at The London School of Contemporary Dance graduating 2010. Ella studied yoga under professor Abby Hoffman’s Embodied dancer programme graduating in 2013. Performance experiences include touring in ‘The Rodin Project’ with Russell Maliphant Company, Guarini Dance Company, Southpaw Company, A dancer for the Professional Cast of the Olympics Opening Ceremony, Breakin’ Convention, Adidas, and Wendy Houston’s ‘Stupid Women’.
