Starter Soup: Feeding Ideas, Improving Lives
If you are working with any groups of young people in Newcastle please let them know about this opportunity.
Young people (aged up to 25) are given the opportunity (including training) to develop innovative projects and social businesses to tackle real, area-based issues.
It is based loosely on a project which started in Detroit in 2010 (www.detroitsoup.com). At a quarterly event (to be held at a variety of community venues within core areas), 4 of these projects deliver a 4 minute verbal presentation to an audience of fellow young people and key public, private and social sector partners. The audience then decides democratically (via ballot) how to allocate 4 funding awards – a top prize of £200, and three runner up prizes of £100 each. Thus, any youth-led project or social business pitching for the money is guaranteed at least £100 for their project.
Starter_SOUP also offers young people enterprise training, and involves young people in community engagement, to build greater cross-sector integration into some of Newcastle’s most deprived Wards and create new productive, dynamic relationships to collectively build capacity in people and place.
