Van Huynh Company – Invitation to Work-in-progress sharing at The Place
Dam Van Huynh and Van Huynh Company invite you to attend the sharing of their new work-in-progress Đẹp (working title) at The Place in Studio 5 on Friday 19 August at 4pm.
This work is the result of a four week research period involving 6 performers and a composer. We are now looking for further interested partners to support the next exciting stage of the project in 2017 which will include a final research period leading to a tour. Support could include but is not limited to: co-productions/commissions, bookings and further proposals for creative exchange.
Please note: This work contains full frontal nudity.
Theme:
With his latest research, Dam Van Huynh further examines influences that impact his work through his Vietnamese heritage, questioning in particular cultures and their relation with death. Infused with Vietnamese funeral chants, the work explores traditional ideas of rebirth. In Vietnam the family and community guide the dead to pass into another realm. The work-in-progress depicts this emotional journey through stages of grief from initial resistance to final surrender. The purpose is not to bury the deceased, but to send them off on their journey to the immortal world.
About Đẹp:
Đẹp – Vietnamese word for “beautiful” – is part of Dam’s “Nude Series” in which he explores the many facets on the theme of the nude self: the physical form and the fragile self, stripped of inhibitions. This exploration marks a pivotal point in Dam’s artistic development as he embraces his cultural heritage in an attempt to get closer to an honest form of creativity and self discovery. The work sees the shift in the artist’s choreographic language delving into universally shared themes on the human condition.
Fragile and vulnerable, devoid of past or future, the dancers are raw and honest in a pure human form. Disrobed from distraction they begin at the point where the mind leaves the physical self, forming a ritualistic trance with no beginning and no end.
