An exciting new role has been filled at Dance City, the North East’s leading dance organisation. Heading up the brand new MA Advanced Dance Performance will be David Lloyd, a well-known and highly respected dance artist, choreographer, educator and producer.

Artistic Director Anthony Baker says of the appointment, “Dance City is thrilled to have attracted such an inspiring course leader in David Lloyd for the new MA Advanced Dance Performance. It has long been an ambition for us to develop a graduate company, providing a route for early career dancers to remain in the North East. The year-long MA provides dance graduates with their first experience in a professional touring company, performing brand new works choreographed on them. It’s an essential stepping stone towards a career as a performer and so often we see North East talent drain away from the region at this critical point, having graduated from the Dance City BA (Hons) Professional Dance. It’s one of our core missions to retain talent in the region and to be the driving force behind a thriving dance economy. Having David Lloyd on board is a significant step towards that goal.”

David graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 2006 and immediately commenced a successful performing career. David moved to London in 2008, working with Luca Silvestrini, Gary Clarke, Mad Dogs, Neon, Barebones and Jasmin Vardimon over the next few years. Film and TV credits include BBC’s Atlantic series 1 playing the role of Nereus and Paramount Pictures World War Z.

David started Mischief Company in 2014 with Natascha Metherell, a director working with Terry Gilliam. Mischief Company has produced and toured a number of works and grown to a Company of 14. David became Course Leader for JV2, Jasmin Vardimon Company’s Professional Development Diploma in 2017.

David says, “I’m so excited to be taking the role of MA course leader. I want to build a course to nurture talented individuals to push them beyond their limits and create employable performers and dance artists ready for the tough industry ahead. I want to create a course that builds both individual qualities and also brings them into a professional company. Giving them a vast knowledge of skills, business minds and professional expectations to develop a new strong company to push boundaries in the dance sector. I look forward to getting started!”

The Dance City MA Advanced Dance Performance is currently recruiting its first cohort, with auditions in Newcastle (January 2019) and London (February 2019). The MA will commence in October 2019.
