Residencies

Throughout the year Dance City offers a number of residencies based at it’s building in Newcastle. Residencies seek to bring creative and inspirational people to Dance City, to share their knowledge and skills and to accelerate skills development of other dance-makers.

Residency opportunities are aimed at international dance-makers and companies, but may include those from the North East, who can bring something additional to the dance ecology at Dance City and in the region. Dance-makers and companies are usually invited to take up a residency here by Dance City’s Artistic Director. Residency opportunities are also publicised from time to time here on our website and through our pro dance-maker e-newsletter.

Being in residence at Dance City gives you:

• Free use of studio/theatre space
• Technical support
• Marketing support
• Artistic support

Resident dance-makers will be asked to deliver some or all of the following:

• Pro or open class
• Open discussion/creation sessions for other artists
• Sharings of work in progress

The duration of a residency is subject to discussion. All residencies are subject to negotiation and agreement between Dance City’s management and the artist.

Dance City residencies in partnership with BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art call out

Dance City supports dance artists regionally, nationally and internationally in developing single or collaborative ideas involving choreography, dance and movement. Throughout the month of June 2021, Dance City has joined forces with BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art in a partnership providing three one-week residency opportunities.

BALTIC is currently in a four year partnership with Siobhan Davies Dance, London, called CONTINUOUS seeking to advance the creation and presentation of experimental independent contemporary dance within visual arts contexts. BALTIC is delighted to collaborate with Dance City to provide rehearsal opportunities for dance artists based in the North East, and to further support the practice in our region.

The Level 1 space at BALTIC will be offered as rehearsal space, free of charge to three different artists/companies, on weeks commencing 7, 14 and 21 June 2021.

You are invited to develop ideas and work for one week (Monday – Friday, 10am – 5pm) in BALTIC’s performance space. In addition to this, Dance City is offering a £500 contribution to each artist/company per residency, on receipt of an invoice to Dance City.

We actively encourage applications from artists who self-identify as Black, Asian, ethnically diverse, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, neurodiverse, disabled and mature (10 years plus of professional practice).

These residencies are exclusively for artists who are from, who studied at undergraduate level or above, or who are based in the North East of England. The lead applicant must show their connections and commitment to developing the North East dance sector. Aerial work cannot be supported.

Applications for this new residency opportunity in partnership with BALTIC are to be made clicking on this link and completing the form HERE

If you need support with completing the form or would prefer to post an application, please contact Alex Anslow, Dance City’s Producer, alex.anslow@dancecity.co.uk or 0191 269 5586.

Applications will be accepted from 6 May and the deadline is midnight on 26 May. Decisions will be taken by the programming team at Dance City and we will let people know by 28 May.

Call out now live – Residencies Without Borders

Dance City is seeking proposals from dance artists/companies based in the European Union and from outside the UK/EU to undertake two, one week residencies as part of our new Residencies without Borders programme.

The residencies we are looking to support can be thematically diverse and the work you choose to apply with can be live performance, dance film or movement research. Dance City is a proud member of the European Dance House Network and the National Dance Network, and values and supports the global community of artists/companies we work with. We want to hear from artists/companies who share our mission to develop artistic exchange and cross-cultural dialogue.
