Call Out – 3 x Dancers for Great Exhibition of the North Commission

Artist Rene McBrearty is seeking 3 female performers to take part in her latest work, a short film commissioned by The New Bridge Project as part of the Great Exhibition of the North, exploring the topics of micro aggressions, self-care and community resilience.

This is a paid opportunity, (the project and fee is subject to the result of an Arts Council England application.)

Synopsis: How to Remove a Single Strand Knot explores the multifaceted roles and identities of one woman played by 3 women. The single strand knot becomes a metaphor for removing micro-aggressions and practicing self-care. Like the knot, microaggressions are everywhere, non-negotiable and relentless, they must be; oiled, covered, braided, removed.  The 3 women sit around a circular table, all working on a task, the end point of the task is unclear. The task is obsolete, monotonous and physically exhausting yet they endure. The women derive solace from the collective nature of the work. The women’s relationship and their learning / unlearning is the subject of the film. There will be a voiceover narrative that runs throughout the film. All roles will involve live action and voiceover work. Shortlisted candidates will receive sides for the audition and selected candidates will be shown a full script before signing a contract.

Additional details: All performers will receive a copy of the film on a USB drive alongside their fee. Mileage for those travelling from outside Newcastle (up to 40 miles from production location) will be paid at £0.40/mile or local travel expenses will be covered. The work is intended to be shown on a non-commercial basis in art galleries. It will be shown as part of ‘Life in a Northern Town’ exhibition at The NewBridge Project: Gateshead in August 2018 (https://thenewbridgeproject.com/events/rene-mcbrearty-jill-mcknight-lifenorthern-town/) and next at Cheeseburn Sculpture in May 2019.
Roles: I am specifically looking to work with women of colour for this project, preferably with experience of performance (from a visual art, music, dance, acting or theatre background.) I am casting 3 black performers. There are no accent or physical characteristics for these roles, and there is no age limitation besides you must be 18+.

How to apply: If you’re interested please send a brief expression of interest (a few sentences) and 3 photos of your work or a link to your website to: renemcbrearty@live.co.uk. Please feel free to email any queries.
