Professional Class: 

Dance City offers free Ballet class on a Monday and Wednesday to professional dance artists who have completed higher education level dance training and are currently or have danced professionally.
Professional classes are developing across the North East, and Dance City’s offer is complementary of the wider offer now available.

To ensure the classes and the artist development programme are relevant we have a criteria which we ask you to check against before signing up to be a professional artist with Dance City.

Criteria to ensure Dance City’s provision for professional dance artists is relevant: 

‘A person trained and skilled with qualifications in a specific form of dance or variety of dancing, employed in a paid professional capacity to perform, choreograph or teach in a variety of settings.’
Dance City and the programme we deliver exclusively specialises in the art form of dance, dance theatre and cross art form work which centres around movement based practices. This includes all styles of dance as well as circus arts.
Our programme for professional artists is subsidised and therefore participants must meet the following criteria in order to benefit from this provision.

Dance artists must:

• be 18yrs +
• no longer be studying within a Further (GCSE/A-level/BTEC) or Higher (Degree) Educational setting.*
• Hold a completed qualification in dance at Level 5 (foundation degree) or Level 6 (undergraduate degree) or higher, or an equivalent e.g Scottish Bachelors Degree or international qualification. Aerial dancers/circus artists (who may have a less formal qualification ) will need to evidence their insurance.
• Be currently based in or from the North East (Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, County Durham & Tees Valley)
• Be able to progress successfully with all material taught at a professional level, allowing all attendees to maximise the training on offer. A discretionary conversation with the tutor may be appropriate to determine if the ability level of the participant is appropriate to continue professional training at Dance City.

  Please note that spaces for professional activities are limited and offered to those who meet the above criteria to ensure those who are pursuing a career in dance are able to access suitable training, support and professional development to meet their needs within the professional dance industry.

  Dance City is delighted to offer alternative provision for those who have training or qualifications that differ from Dance City’s criteria detailed above or wish to participate in dance in a more informal or recreational context.

  Dance City reserves the right to amend the qualifying criteria above where appropriate.
  *Some students studying Level 6 dance courses are occasionally invited to specific activities where appropriate and in consultation with their institution.
